SFX
What are these buttons all about?
These buttons, or buttons that look similar, may be found in some of the databases you are searching, and also appear next to every record that is found in MetaLib and the Library Catalogue. The button links you to the SFX™ database on our Library server, and it checks to see whether the journal or article you have found is available in full text.
An example will explain it best — let's imagine that you were searching on MetaLib for some references to journal articles that you need for an essay. The search has been successful and you have found some good references — click on the SFX button that appears alongside one of the references you found, and a new window like the one you see below will pop up on your screen. This is the SFX Service Window, which offers you a number of choices.
If the full text of the journal article is available from any one of the Library's subscription databases, then a link to that database will appear on the SFX service window — clicking on that link will take you to the full text of that article.
A link to the Library Catalogue will also appear on the SFX service window, which, if clicked on will search the Catalogue to see if we have a version in hard copy.
Below you can see a couple of typical references that you may come across in an abstracting & indexing database. See what happens when you click on the SFX button:
- Article: Keller, Henning; Lieb, Bernhard; Altenheim, Benjamin; Gebauer, Dagmar; Richter, Stefanie; Stricker, Sigmar; Markl, Jurgen. Abalone (Haliotis tuberculata) hemocyanin type 1 (HtH1). European Journal of Biochemistry, v. 264, n1 (1999): 27-39. ISSN 0014-2956

- Article: Palmer, Stephanie. Arbitrary detention in Guantanamo Bay: Legal limbo in the land of the free. Cambridge Law Journal, v. 62, n1 (2003): 6-9. ISSN 1469-2139

If you have any questions about using SFX you can contact us, explaining any difficulties you are experiencing in either accessing or using the service. We will try to repond as quickly as possible. You can also try your Subject Librarian during office hours.
