Secure Electronic Delivery
About Secure Electronic Delivery
The British Library (BL) delivers journal articles and book chapters to you electronically using Secure Electronic Delivery (SED).
When we apply for an article to be sent to you, the British Library will scan it and place it on a secure website. The BL will then send an email to your lancaster.ac.uk email containing a link to the document. To open it, you need Adobe Reader version 4 or above with the FileOpen plug-in installed. Once this has been installed, clicking on the link will download and open the document for you to print.
Please note that:
-
The link works only once
You cannot reuse the link or forward it to another person once you have accessed it.
-
The document is only accessible for 30 days
If you do not download the document within 30 days of receiving the link, it will be deleted from the British Library web server and you will have to place a new request for it. This will count towards your IDS allowance for the year and the library will be charged again for it.
-
You must open the document on the computer where you intend to print it
You are allowed to print a SED document once only. Please ensure that printing is available from your computer before opening the document.
You can save SED documents to your computer and can continue to access them for 14 days from the date of download. If you have paid a copyright fee you have access for 3 years.
- Go to http://fileopen.bl.uk/
- Then "Click here to download the plugin"
- Follow the instructions given. This should automatically install the FileOpen plugin and enable you to access FileOpen encrypted files.
- Then "Click to open a FileOpen test document"
- If this opens you have successfully installed FileOpen and can make SED requests through Interlending and Document Supply.
- Remove the previous version of FileOpen (rel 1) either by re-booting your machine or removing it manually in Add or Remove Programs.
- You will then need to install the new version from Add or Remove Programmes (Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs - Add New Programs - FileOpen Client 3.0 rel1).

A manual install will be necessary for most PCs located in departmental and staff offices. This is done through accessing the Control Panel - double-click 'Add or Remove Programs'.
